Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has strongly criticized Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar after his recent remarks suggesting that even India's B team could challenge Pakistan in their current form. Gavaskar made these comments following India's dominant victory over Pakistan in a one-sided Champions Trophy match last month. He stated, "A B team (from India) certainly can give Pakistan a run for their money. A C team, I am not too sure. But a B team will be very, very hard to beat for Pakistan in their current form."
Inzamam fired back, accusing Gavaskar of intentionally opting out of a match between India and Pakistan during his playing days. "India won the match, they played well, but Mr. Gavaskar should also consider the stats. He once fled Sharjah to avoid playing against Pakistan," Inzamam said during an interview with 24 News HD. "He is older than us, and we respect him greatly, but such comments about a country are in bad taste. You can praise your team, but speaking like this about others is unnecessary."
Inzamam also pointed to the all-time head-to-head record between the two nations, where Pakistan leads India 73-58 in ODIs. He expressed his hurt over Gavaskar's remarks, suggesting that the former cricketer was tarnishing his own legacy. "He should control his tongue. He was a great cricketer, but by making such statements, he is only hurting his own reputation," Inzamam added.
Gavaskar had earlier attributed Pakistan's struggles to a lack of bench strength, stating, "Pakistan always had natural talent, but they seem to be struggling with their bench strength." He praised Inzamam, highlighting how despite a technically unorthodox stance, the former Pakistani captain made up for it with his temperament and cricketing intelligence.
Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Atherton had also suggested that the India-Pakistan rivalry has become one-sided in recent times, especially with Pakistan's declining fortunes in international cricket, where they have failed to perform in the last two ODI World Cups.
