Latham Ruled Out as BLACKCAPS Make Squad Changes for ODI Series vs Pakistan
BLACKCAPS wicket-keeper batsman Tom Latham has been ruled out of the upcoming Chemist Warehouse ODI series against Pakistan after fracturing his right hand during a training session. Latham sustained the injury while batting in the nets, with scans confirming a fracture that requires a cast and at least four weeks of rehabilitation.
BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead confirmed that Henry Nicholls will replace Latham in the squad. Current T20I captain Michael Bracewell will continue to lead the ODI side, while Mitch Hay takes over wicket-keeping duties.
Nicholls, who boasts 78 ODI caps, recently returned to form after a three-month calf injury, scoring five 50-plus scores in his last six domestic innings.
Will Young to Miss Matches for Personal Reasons
Opener Will Young will play the first ODI in Napier before leaving for games two and three to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child. In his absence, 23-year-old Rhys Mariu from Canterbury has received his maiden international call-up as batting cover.
Stead Confident in Team Adjustments
Coach Gary Stead acknowledged the disruptions but remained optimistic about the team’s adaptability.
“We’ve had to be flexible with players unavailable for different reasons. These changes provide opportunities for other players. It’s great to bring Rhys into the squad and welcome back Henry.”
He also wished Latham a swift recovery and extended best wishes to Young and his wife during this special time.
ODI Squad Selection Approach
With over two years until the next ICC Cricket World Cup, ODI squad selections prioritize players on full national and domestic contracts.
The BLACKCAPS squad will assemble in Napier on Thursday, ahead of the first ODI at McLean Park on March 29.
